Internal Family Systems

Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a positive and empowering therapeutic approach that views the mind as a diverse and vibrant landscape of various inner personalities or "parts." In this framework, each part is recognized as a valuable aspect of an individual's internal world, contributing unique qualities, emotions, and strengths.

Imagine your mind as a rich tapestry, woven with different threads, each representing a distinct facet of who you are. In the realm of Internal Family Systems, these threads are the various parts of your internal family – a collection of personalities, each with its own positive intentions and roles.

Through the lens of IFS, individuals can embark on a journey of self-discovery, recognizing and nurturing the strengths of their own inner diversity. This positive and affirming approach helps individuals build a sense of unity within themselves, fostering greater self-awareness, resilience, and overall well-being.

IFS is a model of "psychic multiplicity."  But it is more than just a model -- it reflects the native organization of the human mind.  We see this organizing structure repeated in other much older medical systems, including Oriental Medicine, which traces its roots to ancient China more than 5,000 years ago.

Psychic multiplicity is the phenomenon of the mind; it is the way the mind is structured.
